The State of the Sector: On Gender and Water Access in Africa

"In emerging markets like Sub-Saharan Africa, where over 60% of the population are smallholder farmers, a lack of access to water and irrigation technology is a significant barrier to economic growth–and especially quality of life. But, as we’ll discover today, it’s impossible (and also irresponsible) to consider how we address this barrier without also considering how gender plays a role."

In this first-of-its-kind audio insight piece, join us as we explore large-scale barriers like these which many small-holder farmers face. For example, small-holder farmers in Africa are mostly women, some of whom may be spending up to 4 hours a day physically moving gallons of water for productive and domestic purposes. We’ll discuss how designing irrigation technologies that can be used in multiple ways will best serve its end-users.
